CLAN CARRUTHERS: Carruthers selected as Associate Judge

From our origins in Annandale, South-West Scotland, Carruthers have spread to all corners of the Earth and in many cases made a real difference to the society in which they live. Alexander Carruthers is no exception.

This excellant piece by Ron DeBrock written Dec 2021 in the Edwardsville Intelligencer reports the following:

EDWARDSVILLE — Andrew K. Carruthers of Edwardsville has been appointed to fill an associate judge vacancy in the Third Judicial Circuit.

On Thursday, Chief Judge William A. Mudge announced Carruthers, 42, of Edwardsville would fill the Clarence W. Harrison II associate judge vacancy.

Associate judges are appointed by majority vote of the circuit judges in each circuit. The Third Judicial Circuit encompasses Madison and Bond counties.

A Godfrey native, Carruthers has served as a Madison County Assistant State’s Attorney in charge of the office’s civil division since January. Prior to his government service, he spent 14 years in private practice, primarily at HeplerBroom LLC in Edwardsville and Stobbs, Sinclair & Carruthers, Ltd. in Alton.

(HeplerBloom offering best wishes wrote: For nearly seven years, Carruthers had a vibrant practice at HeplerBroom related to real estate transactions, municipal issues, business disputes, and election matters. For the past year, he has served the public as Chief of the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Civil Division. In speaking of Carruthers’ appointment, Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine (also a former HeplerBroom attorney) noted Carruthers’ “integrity and . . . passion for the rule of law.” Carruthers will be sworn in on January 3.)

“It is a great testament to the future of Madison County’s judiciary that Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Carruthers will soon be serving our community as a judge,” said Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine. “Andy is qualified, of course, but more importantly he has integrity and a passion for the rule of law.

“He has done incredible work as chief of our civil division for the past year, assisting the office in a time of great transition, and winning trust from all he interacts with,” Haine said. “But his life beyond the practice of law remains his fundamental focus. Andy is, at his core, a family man. His wonderful wife, Heidy and his children are his greatest joy.”

Carruthers received his undergraduate degree in 2002 from the University of Illinois at Springfield and his Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2006. He is the great nephew of the late Robert L. Butler, an attorney who also was mayor of Marion.

He served on the Illinois State Board of Elections from 2015-2019 and in 2011 served a two-year term as a park district commissioner for the Collinsville Area Recreation District.

His wife, Heidy, is a professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The family lives in Edwardsville.
