Welcome to the Clan Carruthers Society Webpage, the official Society of the Border Reiver riding family and clan Carruthers.
(Please feel free to peruse our many blog posts on the site, regarding the Clan and family of Carruthers)
Carruthers is a Scottish Border Clan who can date their existance back to the region around Caer Rydderch or Rythyr, in the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde during brythonic times, meaning the fort of Ruther. This gave us the topographical name of Carruthers, which is first recorded as being used in the 12th century.
A keen family historian, our society was the brainchild of Dr George Carruthers who, based on the Royal Charter to John 12th of Holmains in 1755, began bringing the family together on the Facebook page ‘Clan Carruthers’ in 2007. We have since gathered support of Carruthers from all over the world and this eventually led to its formation in January 2017.
The Society’s purpose, in part was to support the recognition by the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh, the only person who has the legal authority to recognise through marticulation of our Chiefly Arms, a Chief of our Clan and Riding Family. The last Chief had died in 1807, with no one taking up its mantle and it therefore lay dormant.
After over 12 years of hardwork and research, a Clan Chief was confirmed by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, on the 19th August 2019 :
Dr S Peter Carruthers of Holmains, Chief of the Name and Arms of Carruthers .
Genealogy and yDNA research groups have also been set up to ensure our family genealogy databases are accurate and proofed. This again rules out some of the current false information out there and will progressively offer a solid foundation for all those who are interested in their family tree, to work from.
Modern Accepted Varients of the name Carruthers although not complete include: Carrutherses, Caruthers, Carothers, Carrothers, Carrithers, Carithers, Corruthers, Corrithers, Cruthers, Crouthers, Carruther, Creuder, Cardus, Carother, Carouthers, Carradice, Carrauthers, Carrederys, Carrodus, Carrotheris, Carrothorys, Carrothis, Carutherys, Caruthris, Carrothyris, Carruderes, Carruderis, Carruthirs, Carruthoris, Caruderis, Caruyeris, Cerrothers, Corithers, Crathers, Cridders, Curthers, Cruthers, Crowthers, Karruthers, Karruther amongst many others
