This is to inform you that our good friend, colleague and a staunch supporter of our Society since its inception, is retiring from his position as Commissioner for Australasia.
Mr Gary John Carruthers, FSA Scot has worked tirelessly on our behalf over the years but for personal reasons he feels it’s time to hang up his spurs and pass the mantle on to his deputy, whom he has the greatest of respect for.
As such and having cleared the promotion with both our Chief, Dr Peter Carruthers of Holmains and on the advice of our Convenor, the role of Commissioner will be taken up by his deputy, Craig Carrothers Monument from immediate effect.

Gary himself is a Carruthers Armiger, having matriculated his arms through the Lord Lyon in 2022 by proven and robust documented evidence of his line dating back to 1625. He is descended through Guileburn and Brydegill directly back to the Carruthers of Dormont line, and through them to the chiefly line of Holmains.
As in all cases of Scottish arms, Gary’s are differenced from our Chief’s, to reflect his lineage although he has kept the motto of Promptus et Fidelis and uses a variation of the seraphim volant proper as his personal crest. Throughout the process he worked with the renowned Scottish heraldist Anthony Maxwell who designed his arms in one of the finest explanations of genealogical progression in heraldry that many have seen, see below.

Gary is also one of our most senior genealogists and through his work is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries here in Scotland. His knowledge base and expertise on our family lines carries world renown. Known for his care, attention and tenacity in his research, his advice on Carruthers has been sought and used by many others to accurately correct Carruthers lines, while his personal research which relates to his own ancestry, has been used as a working base in some clan and family inquiries by former senior members of the Lyon Court.
Gary will be sadly missed by us all but it is hoped that he will still advise from the sidelines, if and when he sees fit.
Thank you for everything you have done Gary, for always being there for advice and support and we offer our sincerest thanks for the work and effort you have put in on the behalf of our family internationally.
From our Chief, and all here at the Clan Carruthers Society (International) and in fact Carruthers world-wide, we wish you well and we are certain your legacy will continue through all those you have helped and supported over the years.
As a man who carries the true Carruthers reiver spirit, you will never be forgotten.
Promptus et Fidelis
