CLAN CARRUTHERS: USA Kilt’s video interview with the House of Edgar, weavers of Carruthers tartan.

USA Kilts interview with the House of Edgar, Scottish weavers of the Carruthers tartan.

The House of Edgar have been weaving our official CARRUTHERS tartan since it’s registration with the Scottish Register of Tartans in Scotland.

Our tartan was adopted by the Chief of the Name and Arms of CARRUTHERS and registered by them as the official Clan/Family tartan of CARRUTHERS.

Although tartans do not come under the jurisdiction of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, he was consulted on the registration. This was to ensure that our chief, Peter Carruthers of Holmains had the legal right to register the tartan as the official tartan of our name.

The CARRUTHERS tartan, first commissioned and registered by Dr George Carruthers our Convenor, was gifted to the clan and family, to be worn by all who recognise the hereditary chief of our family.

Although no family/clan tartans existed before the early 1800’s which corresponds with the first named barber tartans, Reiver families have been progressively registering their own tartans through the decades ever since.

Our tartan, woven in Scotland, with Scottish wool is manufactured by the oldest family business in Scotland still weaving, that if the House of Edgar. They having been weaving Scottish tartans since 1783, less than 40 years after the Battle of Culloden, the last major battle of the Jacobite rebellion.

As an aside, CARRUTHERS were known Jacobites sympathisers and the single white thread in its tartan is in commemoration of the same.
