Since the early 50’s and without a chief, Carruthers were traditionally classed by commercial outlets as a sept of Bruce and for many years wore their tartan.
Until the early 1800’s evidence shows that no records exist of any clan or family, whether highland, lowland or border having a tartan to their name. This is most certainly true for borderers who never wore kilts nor on the norm tartan as the norm. This meant that Carruthers has member had a registered tartans.
In 2017, following on from other border clans and families, Carruthers did register our own tartan but, after being without one for over 210 years we had to wait the confirmation of our chief by the Lord Lyon in 2019 before it became the official clan/family tartan of our name.
It is now registered as such with the Scottish Register of Tartans, the government agency that hold those records, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Its registration number is STR 11700.
The weavers of our tartan are the House of Edgar based in Perth, Scotland, the oldest family run and independent Scottish Weaver in Scotland, with all their tartan being 100% Scottish Wool. This means that all official Carruthers tartan merchandise are the same.
As a new tartan, it takes time for these things to filter through to commercial suppliers, some who will still try to sell you the Bruce tartan for Carruthers to get a sale, but slowly and surely our list of suppliers are growing.
